5 ways to make sure you get some exercise in during the summer

“It’s hot here. Like about 110 today. Dang. I know I still need to exercise but I’m really not wanting to go to the gym.” Have any of you ever had those kind of thoughts? I live in Southern Utah and we get really hot summers. Lately I’ve been going to the gym with my daughter and son in law but when the weather warms up I want to shake things up a bit. I want to be outside. Now I know you are thinking “But it’s hot out there!” You are right. However, the outdoors calls me and I must answer. Nature has a way of making us happy. I like happy.

So, what are some ways we can still exercise in the summer and yet not get too overheated and still get those work-outs in?

1. How about playing baseball in the lake?  As you can see in the picture, we had a blast! It was impromptu but it worked. I even got in the game. The bat – it was plastic. Same with the ball. Notice the two people on paddle boards? They were the outfield and they had to retrieve the ball. No one really ran bases but we had a great time and stayed cool even though the sun was beating down on us. I think it counted as exercise. Don’t you?

2. Get out early (or later) in the day. Enjoy a sunrise or sunset while taking a walk. You can even run if that’s what makes you happy. Try different routes. How about getting in your car and driving somewhere new? Take in the scenery of this time of year but be sure and stay hydrated. You might even want to bring a spritz bottle with water and a couple of drops of doTERRA’s Peppermint essential oil. Spritz yourself (not in your eyes) when you are feeling warm.

3. How about a bike ride? Ride to the park and then swing on the swings for a few. It makes me feel like a kid again. Do you remember trying to see how high you could swing? The slight breeze created when you swing might even cool you down a bit.

4. How about starting a Tai Chi group? Gather some friends, go to someone’s back yard, bring your tablet and find a YouTube channel with a Tai Chi workout.

5. Lastly…how about going swimming? We have a pool in our backyard and I’m in there for a few moments almost every day. This may mean my hair isn’t quite looking like I just came from the beauty parlor, but who cares? It feels good! If you don’t have a pool, or a friend with a pool, check out your community rec center. Most offer water aerobics. Some year round. If they don’t have classes, go swim some laps or even walk the lazy river if there’s one.

Your body will thank you for getting outside and doing something to get it moving. You might even be in a better mood. Exercising outdoors can stimulate endorphins and serotonin which help us feel good. Remember to drink water and to make sure you don’t overdo it. How about a cool cloth soaked in some cool water to wrap around your neck? Enjoy your summer ~ it’ll be gone before you know it!

Morning Rituals – what are they really about?

Do you have a morning ritual?  I read a great article today titled  “7 Morning Rituals to Make your Day 8 Times More Productive.”

Right off the bat I liked the article because it quoted one of my favorite authors. The quote was “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine. ” — John C. Maxwell.

This article had some great ideas – some of which I’ve incorporated and some of which I’m still working on. For instance, I’m getting better at meditation and listening to affirmations.  Someone recently told me about an app called “ThinkUp.” It allows you to record affirmations in your own voice with background music.  It’s supposed to be more effective when we hear our own voice. They even suggest affirmations and then you can just choose the ones you like (or make up your own) and read them while you are recording. Simple and easy. I like that.

I’m also getting better at meditating. I understand now it doesn’t have to be a long process. It doesn’t even have to be at the same place and at the same time each day. But since we are talking about “Morning Rituals” here, meditating is a terrific way to begin your day.  There are so many benefits. If you are one that needs the science behind what makes it work, plenty can be found. The point is ~ just do it!

Exercise. We all know it’s good for us. We just need to do it. Even 10 minutes will benefit you. Walk, run, swim, go to the gym, dance in your living room. It doesn’t matter ~ just do something to get yourself moving. If you can incorporate it into your morning ritual, that much better!

Gratitude. I loved the idea in the above article that suggests we take a few moments to acknowledge some positive things that have happened to us. This doesn’t have to be a long list. Just two or three will do. However, if you are like me, once I begin, the list just seems to grow. Sometimes at night if I have a hard time falling asleep, instead of counting sheep, I will count my many blessings! There’s never a right or wrong time to be grateful.

So, what are morning rituals really about? And why do they matter? It’s about what works for you. I’ve given you some suggestions but you get to choose. Do what makes you happy. Once you begin you will see that they’ll make a difference in your day. When you begin to practice a regular morning ritual, you will then not only make a difference in one day, but you’ll begin to make a difference in your week, then your month, and before you know it your year! You deserve  it. Here’s to having the best year ever!

Support your respiratory system naturally!

Man did we get it good at our house this week! Started off with a Sunday drive in the car and my husband. Shortly after we took off he began sneezing over AND over AND over again.  You know what I mean? Came up so fast that he didn’t know what hit him. But then, of course, I got a turn too! I certainly couldn’t let him suffer alone.

We use essential oils in our house. We love essential oils! We usually never feel under the weather. We just don’t. Well, almost never….

Remember – I am not a Doctor and I can’t diagnose and/or prescribe. I can only share with you how we use different things to support the systems of our bodies and our organs. So, today I’m going to talk about supporting the Respiratory system. I know a lot about essential oils, but recently I realized I had much more to learn….

I began using Eucalyptus and Lavender with some Epsom salts in my bath. When I wanted a shower, I put several drops (maybe 10-12) of Eucalyptus on a washcloth, set it on the shower floor and let the water (as hot as I could stand it) run over it so I, in effect, had an at home spa steam shower experience. Well, if I’m to be honest, it wasn’t really like a Spa steam shower would’ve been, but it worked and I didn’t need to leave the house!

I diffused essential oils ALL the time. Mainly doTERRA’s Breathe Respiratory Blend and Lime. I diffused in our kitchen/living room area and in our bedroom at night. Some nights I couldn’t even smell it but I knew it was there and was working. dōTERRA’s Breathe and Lime are both good at supporting the lungs Respiratory system by helping to keep those airways open and clear.

I also took a mug of hot water and added two drops each of Oregano, Melaleuca, Peppermint and Lemon. No, I didn’t drink it. I set it on my dining room table and inhaled the fumes. It really helped to open those sinuses and airways. What a relief. After I was done with the mug, I did what I call a mini self-facial (notice my reference to another at home spa like experience) by rubbing two of my fingers (no oils) over the sides of my nose, down my cheeks and up and over my eyebrows. Amazing what a little pressure can do.

But what about the oils in the above picture? What did you do with them, you ask?  Well, I made myself (and my hubby) a roll on that helped to support that good old Repiratory system. We LOVE it and both used it on our chest and back several times a day for about a week. It is fabulous and so simple to make. I took a 30 ml roll on bottle and added 20 drops Frankincense, 25 drops Eucalyptus, 40 drops dōTERRA Breathe, 20 drops Thyme and then filled the bottle half way with fractionated coconut oil. The recipe is for a 10 ml roll on bottle, but I love these larger roll ons and so I just filled the bottle about half way. Felt SO good and really helped us be able to sleep without coughing and hacking all night long.

Today we are feeling much better! Even though I wasn’t thrilled with this experience, I have to say I’m grateful. I hope that someone out there reading this will benefit.  Remember to honor your body. Listen to it! I believe our bodies will usually tell us what we need. Get enough sleep. Drink enough water.  Eat healthy foods. Watch (or eliminate) your sugar intake. Exercise. When we pay attention and listen we will benefit. Thank your body for letting you know what it needs to thrive!

Balance in Life

I was on a walk today with my dog, Lucky. It’s nice the weather is warmer and I get to do this again. As I was walking I got to thinking…how much balance do I have in my life? Some time ago I realized that I hadn’t allowed myself to be balanced. Our tagline for Blogging Barefoot is BALANCE ~ WELLNESS ~ ESSENTIAL OILS. Balance is a key part of that and I was singing to the choir yet not practicing what I preached! I love what I do for my “work.” I love sharing about essential oils. I also love teaching and training people on how to grow a successful business with these wonderful products. Yet, somehow, I had let my work get ahold of me and take all my time.

I think part of it comes from the accessibility of social media and how easy it is to get caught up on our computers, tablets, cell phones or whatever. My life had become all about my work and I didn’t take time for anything else. I realized I needed some more “me” time. So then I found a new hobby ~ photography. I really enjoy taking photos and love the instant gratification I get when I take what I think is a great photo.  I can see it right before my eyes and get instant gratification. Isn’t that what our society is all about now? Hate to say it, but I think so.

I loved getting away with my camera and then that’s all I wanted to do! I wanted to play, have fun, not be behind my computer or on the phone all day. Where was the balance in that? Over time it became clear to me that there wasn’t any. I’d found something I loved to do but yet I still needed and wanted to support those I was working with. How do we make this all happen?

Enter Balance! Yes, the oil helps. I love to diffuse it. I love to put a couple of drops in the palms of my hand, rub them together and inhale. I love to rub the oil on the bottoms of my feet. Really rub it in. It works better that way! But there’s more to it than just using an essential oil.

Make a conscious decision to have balance in your life. You don’t want to become overwhelmed, stressed or unhappy. Take time for the things you love and enjoy. If you don’t take some time now, you may miss out. Your body will let you know you need some balance if you don’t listen.  I choose to take some needed time to play and have fun. Had I done this earlier, I would’ve had a lot more enjoyable days and a lot less stress. You are worth it! Now go out, have some fun and remember to have Balance! You deserve it.
